I am a freshman this year. I have a Hong Kong Identity Card, but I am currently living outside of Hong Kong. Should I apply for halls as a non-local freshman?
Your status as a local or non-local student at HKU is determined by your residency status in Hong Kong, not by your current or home address. If you are registered as a local student, you should apply for hall accommodation in Round II Hall Application through the HKU Portal in mid-August. Please refer to your registration record to confirm your status before applying.
I am an incoming exchange student for the coming semester. I have a Hong Kong Identity Card, but my family does not live in Hong Kong. Should I apply for halls as a non-local freshman?
As an exchange or visiting student, you should apply for hall accommodation through the CEDARS platform, starting from mid-March, regardless of your Hong Kong Identity Card status or where your family lives. Hall applications for exchange students are handled separately from the local/non-local undergraduate application process. Please refer to the CEDARS website for application details and deadlines.

Yes, you can still apply for residential halls in later years. Or you may apply for any remaining vacancies at halls during the residential year through the Central Clearing House Scheme. Life at Halls, Colleges and Residences
What will be provided in my room?
Your room is moderately furnished with essential items, including a bed, mattress, wardrobe, study desk, chair, lamp, lighting, LAN port and WiFi access, and an air-conditioner (operated by prepaid card). You will need to bring your own sleeping accessories, such as pillow, bedding, bed sheets, and pillowcases.
Can I cook my own meals in my hall?
A self-catering pantry is available, equipped with a sink, cupboard, hot plate, microwave oven, and refrigerator. You may use these facilities to prepare simple meals. Please note that cooking facilities may vary by hall and you are expected to follow the hall’s safety and cleanliness guidelines.

Cash payment at the Bank of East Asia branch on the HKU Main Campus

I am waiting for the money transfer from my family and cannot settle the debit not before the due date. What can I do?
You may apply for a fee deferment if you are unable to pay by the due date. Please visit this page for details and the application process. For further questions, contact the Fee Deferment (UG) Team at feedefer@hku.hk.
I have paid for my current hall for this semester, but I want to change to another hall within this semester. Can the paid hall fee be refunded or transferred to my new hall?
Hall fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you change to another hall within the same semester, you will need to pay the hall fee for the new hall separately.
